I have lots of art hanging in my living room. I think colors are important, in life, in the home. And I’ve always liked Rothko for his color Monet as well. The Museum of Modern Art is always good for inspiration. I go to museums on weekends every few months, just to clear out my brain. The thing about the English is that they’re always thinking about where your eye is going to travel next, so every movement in the garden is considered. I also am really inspired by English gardens - from the great gardens that have long rows of trees to the tiny wall gardens for growing herbs. But, if I were to, I would go to Austin or Italy. I’m a homebody, so I don’t like to get on a plane and go anywhere. The best hotel in the world is the Hotel Saint Cecilia in Austin. ![]() That was fascinating, because for the first time I had a way - a sort of science - for thinking about how rooms work that wasn’t decorative. You learn that the space around you really matters and can support you and make a huge difference in how you live and work. But I went back to school to become a teacher, and spent most of my career at a Waldorf School, which drew me in because they have a very high emphasis on the environment of the classroom. Ryan, who has recently moved to Bed-Stuy, in Brooklyn, tells us about his inspirations, and doles out some tips for making a room one’s own. He just published his fourth book, “ Apartment Therapy: Complete and Happy Home,” out this fall. Now, he has a full-blown media empire, with Apartment Therapy and a second culinary-related website, The Kitchn, pulling in a total of 38 million readers a month.
